Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lifestyle Medicine?

Lifestyle medicine is a medical specialty that uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a primary modality to treat chronic conditions including, but not limited to, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.  Lifestyle medicine certified clinicians are trained to apply evidence-based, whole-person, prescriptive lifestyle change to treat and, when used intensively, often reverse such conditions. Applying the six pillars of lifestyle medicine—a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connections—also provides effective prevention for these conditions.

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) is the medical professional society for physicians and other professionals dedicated to clinical and worksite practice of lifestyle medicine as the foundation of a transformed and sustainable health care system.

Why is This Important?

They say the most successful public health initiative is one you never knew about. Prevention is invisible, thus making it a tough goal to chase. Lifestyle medicine is significant because it is at the core of all that I do - it is my preventive public health initiative that will save you years of quality life and tens-to-hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on healthcare. This is time, money, and energy that, if I do my job right, you will never know what you would have lost.

My life has been deeply impacted by chronic disease so healthcare was a natural fit for me as a career of choice. I wanted to understand the illnesses that plagued my family to avoid them myself, and to help others live a full and happy life that my family and I didn’t get a chance to have together. Poor health doesn’t just affect the person with the disease, it affects the whole family. If I could help others avoid or reverse chronic disease, it’s like a second chance at life and what an honor it is to give that gift.
